Duster coats to love.
It’s feeling spookily milder, and I for one am shrugging off my oversized knits and am on the look out for something a little more transitional on the outerwear layering front to get me through to the warmer weather ahead. Step forward duster coats, a slouchy longline take on the trench, which offers a little extra layering, often a lot of slimming of the silhouette and definitely a spot of luxe.
For me, a duster coat has a longer line than its close cousin the trench, but it also has more of a relaxed feel about it with less structuring in the silhouette and often comes in a more luxurious fabric than good old twill or gabardine. This cute The White Company coat is billed as a trench but fits quite nicely into my ‘duster coat’ requirements and has the most gorgeous gathering detail at the back. I’ve paired it here with J.Crew Tippi sweater, Brokenbow embellished jeans, a Marni gold bracelet, Anya Hindmarch bag and de rigour Adidas Gazelles.
When choosing the right duster coat for you, look for something which hits just below the knee but at a slimming part of the leg – either aim for just above or just below the widest party of your calf so that you give the illusion of a leaner leg. If the duster coat fits everywhere else, but the length is not quite right, buy the coat and get the hemline altered.
