How to wear yellow this summer

Yellow hues to love.

I’ve always had a bit of a thing for yellow, so when it popped up as a must-have summer trend, I was on it quicker than I can check out an overladen online shopping basket. The only trouble with this cheery hue is that it comes with a bad rep of not being brilliant for all skin tones. But this season, designers and high street heroes alike have churned out enough tonal points of difference on the shade front that you can pretty much pick up the perfect tint for you.

When looking for the perfect yellow hue for your skin tone, the rule of thumb tends to be if you are fair or pale skinned stick to dark yellow or mustards, while if you have olive skin, you can crack into the lemon yellows and bolder brighter side of this cheery hue. Whenever I do those ‘which skin tone are you’ things, I always tend to fall between warm and cool depending on the time of year and how much of the old fake tan I’m sporting at any one time. So I normally end up ignoring rules of thumb and chuck on whichever yellow makes me feel happy – perfect arrangement!

I picked up this L.K. Bennett dress at the beginning of their The Season campaign – you can read all about other fab dresses which are perfect for all sorts of summer occasions from wedding guest outfits or trips to garden parties, speech days and days at the races which we posted earlier here.

Yellow for SS17… how to wear it.

So let’s address those tricky-to-wear problems. Most people have issues with pulling off colourful vibes because they either try to go all in and wear it top to toe or they wear the colour on their top half, thus getting caught up in all that skin tone malarkey. The answer is to hop onto the trend by either starting with a simple accessory or two, or adopt the trend by rolling the colour out on your bottom half… think skirts, crop palazzo pants or chino shorts for the season ahead.

Also, yellow looks fab this season paired with equally on trend khaki and neutrals, so you don’t have to go full-body on the colour if you are feeling a tad timid about road testing it. Who’s going to give it a try? Let me know in the comments below…

Here are some of my fave yellow hues out there right now. Click the images to shop.
