Midi skirts … trends to try

Midi skirts … the lowdown

It’s fair to say I’m not really a skirt person, but this winter in the whole spirit of trying new trends I’ve picked up a few skirts to road test ‘my way’, to see if the girly trait might actually kick in as I get older. With this in mind I spotted some cute midi skirts whilst on a personal shop with a client recently, and reverted back to pick one up once my day job was done.

I’d been taking my client around some of the stores I’m currently loving for on-trend office wear such as French Connection, Warehouse, and Mango, but had sidestepped into Cos to see if I could persuade her to add a little funk to her fashion. Sadly it was only my eye that was taken with all the goodies in said store, but my client is a slow burner so who knows, the midi skirts thing might well end up as one of her office appropriate choices.

Midi skirts have been bubbling around for the past few seasons, but with the advent of the luxe ladylike trend, and some super awesome winter bright hues, there are some beautiful pieces to peek at in stores.

Midi skirts … the details

The midi skirts of today, by nature of their title, hit your hemline at a slightly precarious point. For those of us cursed with the scourge of the cankle, it’s a tricky trend to pull off. But here’s the saving grace. If you choose a skirt with a hemline which hovers just above or beneath the widest part of your calf – you are looking more slimline by the second.

When choosing your midi – take a peek in the changing room mirror. If you love the fit of the skirt but the length makes you feel dumpy (due to hemline issues just mentioned) go ahead and purchase it with a view to having the hemline altered. It might sound a bit grown up – but if everything about the item you are trying fits apart from the hemline – that’s an easy fix.

For an office appropriate look I’m loving these Cos midi skirts paired with some on-trend stripes like this Reiss top, a tailored jacket and some sensible but eye-catching accessories.

For the weekend switch up your look with contrasting brights and practical weekend accessories like this Elizabeth & James backpack and Ash biker boots.

For an evening take simply add some sheer details, a luxe tailored jacket like this Jaeger velvet one (currently on sale at House of Fraser), a simple clutch like this pony-hair Ted Baker number,  and party heels like these awesome Lucy Choi London velvet babies.
