Notes from a Stylist survives spin @soulcycle

Spin class? someone suggested over my 3rd sauvignon blanc on a hot saturday afternoon in Stepford – sure, why not? It’s kinda like mountain biking in the dark right + hip hop….or at least that’s what i’d heard about Soul Cycle.

I’ve got the yoga kit (thanks to lululemon) that can easily be palmed off as spin kit, they loan you the shoes, and then I find out that the first session and shoe hire is free – it’s a no brainer…a spinning I shall go.

On the morning of my big gig I begin to fluster – my persuasive cohorts are seriously chic in downtown spin gear, flip flops and bandanas – I hastily lose the Nike Free Runners and slide into my own flip flops and brace myself for the onslaught.

Once on my perch/seat on my assigned bike, the boom box kicks off and if I stay alert I canjust about manage to figure out what to do as the muzac is sooo loud I can’t figure out what the lovely lady instructor is actually saying, let alone see her in the darkened room.

There’s a lot of great tunes, soulful good words about change- Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror, and being yourself – Lady Gaga’s Born this Way.

At the end of it I’m happy to be alive, very red in the face and dripping with sweat. Once I’ve mastered walking downstairs (2 flights) to our car without face planting on my buddies due to extreme wobbly leg syndrome, the sense of relief and achievement kicks in.

So, would I go back? Well there’s clearly a whole new wardrobe choice to consider – i’m thinking some of the new Duckie Brown for women range might cover the post work out cover up, then Rick Owens might have some assymetric tee’s that would hang nicely whilst ‘jogging’ in place, and I haven’t even started to scope out what Stella McCartney might have to say about all this…. looks like that’s a yes then….
