Postcard from the Bahamas… the sub story

Even though we were staying in the most beautiful of spots at The Ocean Club in the Bahamas the other week, that didn’t stop us checking out what else was on this teeny tiny paradise island… which is actually thankfully, named Paradise Island, so you don’t have to do any guess work.

It’s always easy to get stir crazy when you are a) in a swanky luxury hotel and everyone is running around after you like you were the Queen, or b) the weather gets slightly dodgy so you have to come up with entertainment plans for the kids. On our recent lovely stay, we decided to scope out a few other spots which included the Fish Fry local eatery spot and Atlantis resort.

The Fish Fry

I was gutted (sorry…had to throw that one in… let me just reel it back…) that I hadn’t been clever enough to get some ‘local gal’ intel from my lovely buddy Rhonda, born and bred in Nassau, who luckily spotted on a Facebook post that we were in her home town, and immediately pinged us a list of great local places to try.

The Fish Fry is a spot where a bunch of local restaurants serve up local grub on a very fun and informal basis. The music is hot, the vibe is chilled and the food is humungous! After top tips from Rhonda, and also taking on numerous ‘in the know’ advice from the guys at our hotel, the weight of opinion seemed to be going with Oh Andros as THE place to road test a little fish fry cooking.

Once I’d got my emergency rations sorted, we checked out the menu and decor…

The portions were waaaaay on the big side. If you head there, order a few meals between a gang of you. But the service was great, the local vibe authentic and it was definitely great to get the kids out of their cosseted posh hotel to try some local fayre.

There was a party atmos outside as we waited for our ride back to The Ocean Club – definitely a fun place to try.

Atlantis … aquarium on acid

I love an aquarium – but when you get aquarium + casino + small marina village with eateries – it all gets a tad overwhelming. With a genius ‘on demand’ shuttle car service from our hotel it was easy to pop over to Atlantis whenever we fancied. the ocean club

We made an early forray to scope out the local restaurants in the marina village adjacent to this massive resort, and then returned one evening to hit Nobu for supper.

The weirdest thing I found about this resort destination was that all paths led you through the casino. All very well if you are hanging with a bunch of adults, but having to schlepp kids through that environment every day might be a tad disconcerting.

The aquarium, on the other hand, is something to behold. It looks like there’s a whole city community hanging out just metres under your nose. It’s one of the most amazing things to see all those fishy species up close and personal, but for kids, the awe and wonder can be seen in their faces.
