Severe Selvedge denim … what to wear this weekend

Severe selvedge denim … time to switch up your turn ups.

Thanks to the magic of the ever-revolving fashion hamster wheel, and the need to switch up our style constantly, say hello to the severe selvedge denim hem this summer. First spotted back at London Fashion Week sported by the likes of Yasmin Sewell, we knew it wouldn’t be long before this cute alternative to the de-rigeur 2 x hem roll up of last summer would be ousted from the top denim styling chart.

Luckily denim designers everywhere seem to have got the joke that we find it tricky figuring out exactly how to roll our own hemlines to the correct level, so there are tons of severe selvedge denim pieces out there just waiting for you to snag them and throw them on this weekend.

So what’s the scoop about selvedge denim and why is it so hot right now?

Selvedge denim (and it’s current incarnation severe selvedge denim) is all about denim woven from old-fashioned looms by producers commited to creating a superior product, with Japanese mills being the unquestionable masters right now. Using old selvedge looms to create today’s denim means variations are noticeable on the denim surface, giving the end product a more unique feel.

Severe selvedge denim … how to wear it.

I picked up these Point Sur slim stacker Japanese selvedge jeans from the London J.Crew store this week after popping into the Anthropologie AW14 press day… love the fact that these stores are conveniently opposite each other on Regent Street, so I can get my creative boho fix right along with my preppy east coast fix in a matter of minutes.

As with any denim it’s worth going through the rigamarole of trying them on. These J.Crew ones came up quite big in my regular size, so I sized down for a better fit.

I’ve paired my denim with a splash of cobalt blue with this fun Acne Studios bomber and Whistles boxy sweater. The espadrilles I couldn’t resist – how cute are these from Manebi?

To complete the look I’ve added this statement necklace from Accessorize (who are worth taking a peek at this weekend as they have a bunch of fab spring offers on selected items) Also loving this large tote from Karen Millen for those weekend tromps up the high street, and these mirror sunglasses from J.Crew…just in case the sun dares to show its face this weekend.
