Spring shirts … stack of 6

Spring shirts … new season styles

I’ve always been a bit of a fan of a crisp white shirt. Maybe it’s down to watching too many Audrey Hepburn movies as a teen and seeing how a perfectly starched shirt could perk up any outfit. So, fast forward to this season, and I’m beginning to clock a number of spring shirts on the horizon which are perfect to add to your closet for the warmer weather ahead.

We are at that funny transitional time where stores are still trying to punt out the dregs of their sales items, yet new collection pieces have not quite landed. It’s known in the fashion biz as the trans-seasonal time when the keen eyed shopper can snag a few staples from the pre-season collections, which will work well into the summer zone. Take the spring shirts for example, which are dropping into stores right now. These classic items don’t scream ‘new trend’, but they do whisper ‘wardrobe staple’

Spring shirts have arrived with a new twist or two. Forget the sensible work shirt of old, spring shirts are all about adding a freshness to your look, and pushing you gently into considering a few of the new shapes and silhouettes to come.

Spring shirts … how to wear them

The key to rocking the spring shirts this coming season, is to pick one with a little chutzpah. Step away from the plain and boring button down, and look instead for a shirt with something to say for itself.

Take a peek at the J.Crew offerings in my stack above – I love the embellished collar one, perfect with a pencil skirt for the office, whilst the tux effect one I will be rocking with my boyfriend jeans and a statement necklace this weekend.

For a new season take on spring shirts, look out for boxy cuts like the 3.1 Phillip Lim and the Lover cropped shirt. Wear cropped versions with high waisted wide leg pants for the office, and boxy ones with a slimline lace skirt.

Don’t even think about tucking your shirt in this upcoming spring – leave it to languish over your skirt or trousers for an elegant, modern way to work this closet staple.
