Statement coats to obsess over
I have to confess to being a bit of a statement coat addict. I know you’re supposed to invest in one and then work it to death over a number of years until even the moths have given up on it, but in our world of fast fashion there’s not a season that goes by without me lusting after another tweed embellished number, or a pretty pastel print in a princess cut. So this season, I’ve decided to embrace my addiction and simply nab those statement coats when they appear, but offset the cost by being brave and passing on my pre-loved pieces to genius designer re-sale sites like BuyMyWardrobe or Vestiaire Collective.
This statement coat obsession is also not a one trick pony when it comes to style savviness. It’s a thing that has served me well during the past few London Fashion Week seasons for sure. Imagine the angst us poor fashion types have to go through before heading out the door on any given fash week day as the ‘what to wear’ conundrum kicks into overdrive. The key to making any look work I’ve figured out is to simply throw an on-trend coat over any old thing you please and shazam – you look like you belong to the fash pack. Genius non!? So from here on in, expect to see me working my good old jeans and roll neck uniform all season, but keep an eye on my ever revolving coat collection…
This little cutie is by J.Crew which I managed to snaffle via the awesome Net-a-Porter personal shopping service. I paired it with a simple black roll-neck from Equipment, J.Brand skinny pants, Acne Studios ankle boots and Chloe Drew bag for a recent girls supper.

Statement coats – how to wear them
Whether you have a yen for embellishment or animal prints, geometric craziness or fur trim, there’s a statement coat out there for all of us. The key to making the look work is to remember that the coat itself is doing all the talking. Pair with a top to toe neutral outfit for maximum cool points, or stick to basics for the weekend like your favourite ‘normcore’ in order to let the coat take pride of place.
