How to style a floral shirt.

If you’re a regular reader of the blog, you’ve probably guessed by now that I’m not a mad keen fan on pattern, but I am willing to give it the odd bash each season for the sake of perking up my slightly neutral obsessed closet. So this Autumn, what with florals being a big thing and all that, I thought I’d road test a floral shirt and see if I could work it into my day to day uniform with no tears.

I spotted this gorgeous Boden silk shirt in their new season offerings, and what do you know, it kind of goes with everything I already own and more. It has just enough pattern in a not too ditsy size to keep me in my style comfort zone, and it’s a super flattering silhouette to boot. I own a lot of silk shirts, and they do tend to look a bit too drapey, but the cut and shape of this one is a little more tailored and therefore looks good dressed up or down.

The key to making any patterned piece work is to ensure that it’s the only busy item you are sporting at any one time – unless you’re going for that mixed patterns trend which is still having a bit of a moment. Keep the rest of your look pared back and neutral and let the print do all the talking.

Also if you’re on the petite side like me opt for smaller sized prints so that you don’t get engulfed by an elaborate pattern. Whilst if you are on the more statuesque side you can knock yourself out with bolder prints.
