If this spate of warm weather has got you reaching for your summer clothing, but the wind chill still has you erring on the side of caution, then the new season slew of chinos might very well be your new best friend. Of course, the chino is a classic and gets an outing each spring, but this time around they are actually having a bit of a moment and are a nice alternative for us denim devotees who could do with a bit of a change.

I’ve always favoured a tomboy kind of a chino – probably thanks to my addiction to J.Crew who churn them out each year in a pleasing paint-spatter-meets-patched-up format, but that’s not to say there’s no room for a preppy vibed chino look or two in one’s closet too. I always find it useful to take a peek at Pinterest when looking at new ways to style a classic.

So how can we work this perennial winner into our closets this year? They are pretty versatile, and you could easily get away with dressing them up or dressing them down to tweak a number of wears out of them. The best way to upscale something classic or basic is to throw a little luxe at it. Think silk, satin or sequins for starters just to #ElevateTheEveryday as the lovely Online Stylist likes to say.

Weekend: J. Brand chinos, Bella Freud slogan tee, Mango denim jacket, St Tropez tote, Nike sneakers.

Office: J. Brand chinos, Mango pyjama shirt, Mango tweed jacket, Carolina Santo Domingo bag, Chloe pumps.

Cocktails: J. Brand chinos, Cami NYC silk cami, Amanda Wakeley tux jacket, Simon Miller bucket bag, Ellery pumps.

To bring your chinos into this season with style try a few on-trend touches. I’ve added a CamiNYC silk cami and a tuxedo blazer to this cocktail look in my edit and hey-presto, you could easily mingle amongst the absolutely fabulous at a cocktail party with no trouble. Statement sleeves and peek-a-boo shoulders are still having a bit of a moment too, so look for crisp cotton tops to pair with your chinos with this in mind. This season slogan tees and animal print on anything are also in and are an excellent choice to add some fun to your daytime chino look.

In other news, I’m fleeing these shores for a week, so I’m taking a slight hiatus from the old blog. You can follow my escapades on Instagram @notesbyastylist if you fancy – otherwise I’ll see you back here in a week.
