What to wear to Wimbledon in the heatwave
Last week I headed to Wimbledon for the second day of play. I’d never been before so was highly excited to score some tickets from a buddy. Aware that the Brit summer season is tricky to dress for at the best of times, throw in a heatwave and your sartorial options become a tad diminished.
Wimbledon is not like Royal Ascot or Henley where there are exacting terms for your dress code, but having said that turning up in a post Glastonbury festival look complete with the sights and smells of your grand boho adventure still lingering would most likely be frowned upon. With the heatwave we are currently enjoying threatening to make a great oozing hot sticky mess out of you within the space of a few minutes in your Centre Court seat, I figured a few hot weather appropriate dressing suggestions would be helpful.
When I think of Wimbledon my mind conjures up pictures of Mrs. Kim Murray strolling around looking immaculately stylish in a simple summer dress. This season even the officials have upped the ante on elegance with their uniform being designed by Ralph Lauren. If you’re looking for a smartish vibe for the day then you can’t go wrong with a cotton dress. Yes, silk or linen might be tempting, but when it’s 80f and you are stuck in your seat for a set or two, unsightly sweat patches, and crumpled linen are sure to follow. Think short-sleeves, spaghetti straps or sleeveless to nail a summer vibe.

The big trend of the season for summer dressing has got to be the little white dress – opt for crochet, broderie Anglais or cut-out styles to allow for full on breezy lightness.

For shoes, flats are a must. If you want to catch the action on the outer courts there’s a fair bit of schlepping involved busting your way through the equally hot and sweaty crowds searching for shady spots. Go for gladiator styles, lace-ups or espadrilles.

Finally, a hat is key for the hot weather. Although we’re not talking blow your mind Royal Ascot creativeness here. For Wimbledon, your hat needs to be small enough not to impair another spectator’s view. Look for panamas, boaters, trilbys or caps in light fabrics and hues to suit the summery vibe.
