Monotone Dressing

Montone dressing for the win.

If like me, you were dealt the short person cards in the family gene pool lottery, then monotone dressing could be right up your street. Over the years I’ve found myself turning to it more and more, partly because I like a bit of a style uniform to revert to when I roll out of bed of a morning, and partly due to its magical masking powers which fool the onlooker into thinking that you are slightly taller than you are.

The gist of the monotone dressing game is all about wearing one solid colour from head to toe. With no discernible lines slicing up your frame the eye is tricked and hey presto you are almost 6 foot tall… well not actually, but you get the idea.

Monotone dressing shouldn’t be muddled up with monochrome dressing, which is a whole other masterclass in minimalism in itself. The joy of monotone is that it’s one colour head to toe, while monochrome is all about different shades or intensities of one colour worn together. For monochrome dressing think artsy minimalist, for monotone dressing think all sorts of rainbow brights and summer sorbet hues to play with.

Here I’m wearing a Me + Em knit paired with Theory satin pants (similar Me + Em ones here), Chloe bag and J.Crew coat. Boots are Aquazzura from a few seasons ago.

Another neat trick for a lengthened silhouette is to wear a longline single breasted coat… like this J.Crew one, which gives an extra long and clean line to your look.

So why not have a bash at this lengthening trick and see if it works for you.

I’ve added this post to the fab Not Dressed as Lamb #SaturdayShareLinkup by Catherine Summers – you can find loads of other great reads in one spot – pop over for a read.
