If, like me, the thought of squeezing your aged bod into a teeny tiny LBD whilst simultaneously exposing woefully pasty pins and a few flabby bits to boot has you filled with dread this festive party season; then fear not, I’m here to tell you that there are plenty of alternative LBD party outfit ideas out there to calm your palpitating heart. Here is one of my faves.

Thanks to the trend for all things metallic, velvet or sequin this season, there are oodles of party-ready separates choices which will fill your heart with festive cheer and have you switched up from Cinders to the Princess at the party in a heartbeat.

For my inaugural event of the season last weekend I plumped for my fave Zara metallic pleated midi skirt (similar here or here) and this uber comfy oversized knit from Acne. A pair of Aquazurra heels and my trusty Chloe Drew bag finished the look as I hot footed it next door to our neighbour’s fizz-fuelled celebration… I vaguely remember being a little more slow-footed on the way back that’s for sure.

Here’s the body issue checklist this look covers up for me.

  •  Hide flabby upper arms with a large knit – check.
  • Disguise expanding midlife midriff by introducing slimming vertical thin pleats to waistline – check.
  • Tuck over-sized jumper into waist band to give the illusion of waistline – check.
  • Midi skirt length with hemline hitting at just the right point to show off skinniest part of leg – check.

An oversized knit is also fab for counteracting a pear-shaped bod, bringing your silhouette into proportion by adding bulk to the top half.

Alternative LBD party outfit edit.

I’ve posted about my love for borrowing from the boys and sporting a tuxedo before – you can read that post here. But this time around I was looking for a more ladylike approach to my festive dressing, coupled with my obsession for oversized knits. Luckily I’m not the only one obsessed, so it’s easy to find a cute sparkly skirt and boyfriend knit combo which will have you nailing a few trends in one look this party season.

Here are a pile of metallic and sequined skirts to lust over… click the images to shop.

Try these oversized knits to pair with the skirt edit above. N.B. the only trouble with an oversized knit which I’ve come across is that it gets tricky to jam your arm into a jacket. But if you opt for a chunkier knit and you are just heading somewhere which doesn’t have you hanging outdoors too long, then a wrap or cape does the layering trick.
