Denim dress … trends to try

Denim Dress … what’s the scoop?

So, you know how we always reach for our trusty jeans every time we need an outfit akin to a comfort blanket? Well, this season those cheeky denim designers have decided to up the ante on the sartorial front and start throwing other garments into their mix. Exhibit one is the denim dress. It comes in various forms from shirt dress stylie, to cocoon, to shift, but my current favourite take on this fun-loving, transition wardrobe cutie, is the tunic denim dress.

There’s a shed load of 60’s inspired looks heading our way this winter, so when you throw that easy-to-wear style into the denim mix, the result is an uber-comfy and on trend item which has the added benefit of being super durable. Yes, there’s a lot to be said for the practicality of the shirt dress – and this MiH jeans dancing dress did tickle my fancy for a nano second. I also snooped at the MiH Jeans knot front dress, but when faced with having to hold that midriff in to diminish all the attention at my waistline, or just chill on the sucking-it- all-in front, and cram another croissant down my gullet, then quite frankly you had me at tunic.

The raw hemline of this MiH jeans denim dress also tips a nod to the frayed hem trend, so when it comes to nailing three trends in one, you’ve pretty well got it sorted.

Denim dress … how to wear it?

I wore my MiH jeans denim dress on one of my London Fashion Week days recently. It was one of those schlepping around town hoicking a massive bag stashed with weighty camera kinda days, so flats were a must and this relaxed but on-trend dress was perfect for the scene.

I amped up the bling factor as the dress is pretty frugal on the glamour front. I wore it with this J.Crew necklace (above) – similar here, and Hipanema bracelet (below) the ring is Eddie Borgo. The shoes are Marc by Marc Jacobs creepers from a few years back. If it’s creepers you’re after, take a peek here at Underground for a fab selection. Or these awesome gold ones by Esquivel, or these white paneled ones by Common Projects.

This was also one of the days I’d had my hair done in an up-do thanks to the Toni & Guy fashion fix which you can read about here…

The only downside of working a denim dress for the first time, is that like most denim jeans, they have that tendency to bleed some of the denim colour onto other garments. I spent most of the un-seasonally warm day with my lovely All Saints crop jacket wrapped around my waist whilst gadding about fash week, only to find that the blue hue of the dark denim dress had rubbed off onto the arms and shoulders of the jacket – doh! Ah, well, nothing a bit of a dry cleaning visit won’t cure. All in all – a perfect transitional day dress.
