Embellished knits … stack of 6

Embellished knits: the story

I’ve been to a bunch of press shows this week for Spring 14, but have bundled myself up against the cold London weather with a steady stream of embellished knits. The embellished knit is one of those micro trends which seems to have stuck. It started with the odd Markus Lupfer sweater a few seasons ago, developed in the form of the statement sweatshirt via the likes of Kenzo, and this season is well and truly ensconced as a firm fashion favourite for the cooler months.

Your embellished knits can take about any format you like. You can choose something that has full sweater coverage if you are up for making a statement. Or alternately work a less ‘in your face’ angle with a slight bedazzling detail here or there.

 How to wear embellished knits

These babies can work any number of occasions, especially heading into the festive season, which always calls for a little sparkly touch here or there. The embellished knits are the perfect office to party turnaround. Pair an oversized knit with a preppy pencil skirt and flats by day, come the office party switch your flats for heels, roll up your sleeves and get ready to conga.

Just about any body shape can work this look. Think oversized pieces paired with slim pants or A-Line skirts if you are suffering the effects of too many mince pies around your midriff. Alternatively try a figure hugging sweater with your boyfriend jeans and heels for a more relaxed take on the look.

The genius aspect of embellished knits lies in the fact that you don’t have the added hassle of trying to figure out your accessories. Your knit is making the statement, no additional baubles required.

A final word of warning when investing in embellished knits. Whether you are going high street or high end, they normally come with a little packet of spare jewels attached to the price tag. Make sure you hang on to it as those delightful little gems quietly nestling on your new knit are not averse to going AWOL, resulting in the need to call on your Home Ec sewing skills of days gone by to restore your prized possession to its full party wear glory.
