Everyday Velvet

Velvet as daywear.

If you’ve usually reserved your velvet pieces for cocktail nights or only dragged them out of the back of the closet for Christmas, this season it’s time to rethink your velvet strategy and here’s why. With velvet owning the catwalks for AW16, there’s probably not an item you can’t snap up this year which doesn’t come in velvet, it’s hit the mainstream, so it’s time to start thinking seriously about wearing it every day.

I snapped up this gorgeous navy blue velvet bomber jacket from Sandro recently and can’t stop wearing it literally… all the time! Here I’ve paired it with a tie front silk blouse from Donna Ida (who I met recently and you can read all about here her fab jeans service here)

I also can’t get enough of this uber useful Mansur Gavriel bucket bag for Autumn. Genius for chucking all that stuff you don’t actually need in a bag and having it still feel half empty, yet versatile enough to wear as a cross-body bag which isn’t too hefty.

Everyday Velvet… what to shop.

So which items might work as everyday velvet and which should be reserved for the festive season only? For me, I’ve always had a thing about velvet accessories and outerwear being slightly unexpected pieces to benefit from a little luxe treatment. Also if you’re teetering on the brink of investing in any trend, buying an accessory or two is always a great way to ease yourself in. If you’re thinking the velvet for everyday thing is a step too far, then road test a velvet sneaker or small cross-body bag to see how it feels.

In terms of on point colourways – look for autumnal hues and rich jewel tones or this season’s greens, purples and oranges to nail the trend right.
