How to style cargo pants at 50 plus.
I’ve always had a bit of a thing for cargo pants so when I spotted that they are bubbling under back on trend this season, it was time to drag mine out from the back of the closet. They were huge in the 90’s thanks to good old All Saints making sure we were all over the combat vibe and was it just me who bought big into the old J.Brand houlihans around a decade ago? However cargo pants affected your style journey back in the day, it’s time to give them another look and scope out how to style them at 50 plus.
You can dress your cargo pants up or down and make them one of the most useful additions to your outfit armoury. The new slew of cargo pants are super comfy, have ever so versatile pockets for almost any eventuality, and can be paired with anything from your basics and sneakers for a sports luxe daytime look, to a pair of heels and a silk top to elevate your outfit to date night status.
The older I get the more comfortable I get re-trying looks I loved from the past. Gone are the days where I’d dismiss out of hand a certain style without even giving it a little thought on how I’d style it up today. With cargo pants the same rules apply – I’m not advocating wearing them a la aforementioned All Saints, all bare midriffs and dad sneakers, but wearing them with a little chic styling works a treat. Think monotone dressing or at least working with neutral separates to tone down the funk factor and that pair of heels adds just the right luxe statement for after dark events. I’ve paired my Re-Done cargo pants here with an Arket blouse, Kurt Geiger animal print heels (similar here) and an oldie but goodie Orla Kiely bag.
Cargo pants this season are predominantly in a khaki mix – which is a good thing as all things khaki are also having a bit of a moment so you’re kind of hitting two trends in one. You can also find camo, blacks and pastel hues which all work well with this winter’s muted colour tones.
Cargo pants… where to shop.
So where to snap up your cargo pants this season? Most denim brands are hopping on the back of the trend, so that’s an easy place to start. But keep a look out also for department stores which stock a nice high-end high street range of brands making it easy for you to shop in one spot if you’re still loving heading to the great outdoors for your shopping spoils. For the rest of us online addicts it may be worth hanging back a week or two till the sales kick in closer into Christmas and beyond New Year to snap up a cute pair for the transitional winter to spring season.
