Lace detail … the skinny

Whilst some of us might be a tad wary of trying out a whole trend in one go, when it comes to road-testing these babies there’s a lot to be said for opting for a nod to said trend. This year one of my resolutions is to have a go at some of the looks out there, but make them both age and lifestyle appropriate. This week I’ve taken on lace detail – partly due to the fact that I’m rubbish at trying girly trends, but also as a way to ease myself into wearing a full on DVF lace dress I bought in the sales, which I’m wearing to a cocktail event later this month.

For me, a self-confessed tomboy dresser, trying anything as girly as lace is a little daunting. But by picking a piece with only a smattering of lace detail, it’s enabled me to tick the trend box and still stay in my comfort zone.

Lace detail … how to wear it

Like any scary trend, the easiest way to work lace detail is in a dark neutral, so as not to draw too much attention to the fact that you’re actually looking a little ladylike – perish the thought!

I chose this navy Daisy lace mini skirt from J.Crew as the base to my forray into feminine dressing. I paired it with a boyfriend cashmere sweater (also J.Crew) but you can find similar here from M&S, or here from Topshop. All that dark neutral stuff can get a little tedious, but piling on too many accessories can detract from the lace detail which you are trying to rock in the first place. A simple statement necklace (this one from Ily Couture but similar here from the Bauble Bar) and an envelope clutch with a pop of color and you have your look pegged.
