Polka dot trend to try.

New season pieces are starting to land in store right now, and if you’re anything like me, you will be itching to jump onto the new trends before the official start of Autumn. (Although judging by the current Brit climate you could say we are already there in August). One of the trends which has already caught my eye is the polka dot trend. This one pops in and out of fashion every season or so, but for AW17 it seems to have risen above the usual nod to a trend and taken designers and high street brands by storm.

I spotted (sorry couldn’t resist) this cute J.Crew polka dot twin set earlier in July. I’m quite partial to an embellishment or two and this combo sports a few sequins on each dot which puts me in my happy place straight away. Added to that its must-have hue of red, it was a new season no brainer. I’ve paired it here with the good old trustworthy J.Brand raw hem jeans (yes that raw hem thing is still segueing through to next season) and these Prada Mary Jane block heels (similar new season ones in velvet here) and cross-body purse.

The key to embracing polka dots and pulling them off, like most statement prints, is to keep it to one piece and one piece only (although two obvs if it’s a twin set as above). Keep everything else on the neutral down low in order to let the dots do the talking. Think proportions and sizing – smaller size dots if you are on the petite side, or knock yourself out with oversized spots if you are lucky enough to be a taller gal.

Adding pattern to any part of your bod will draw attention to it, so think carefully about where you want to sport your spots. If you are an inverted triangle shape where your top half is larger than your bottom half, adding the polka dots to your lower half and wearing a dark neutral on top will balance out your silhouette. Similarly, the trick works the other way around for pear shaped bods – wear your spots on your top half to draw the eye up and away from any lower half worries you may have. If you’re not sure where you are on the body shape spectrum, pop over to our Start Here page for a quick crash course.
