Red and Pink: New season colour pairings.

If you’re a bit of a colour-phobe, the upcoming SS19 season might not particularly be in your comfort zone. What with Crayola brights and ice-cream sorbet pastels heading our way, it’s not going to be easy to dodge a spot of colour in your favourite stores. So for the brave colour loving souls amongst us, this week I thought I’d take a peek at the burgeoning trend of new season colour pairings and in particular red and pink… {stands by for all sworn minimalist dressers to evacuate the blog…}
At the beginning of each new season, I tend to spend a whole lot of time reading trend reports or on Pinterest poking around at street style looks and generally getting a feel for what’s about to explode in popularity for the months ahead. With colour pairings right up there in the popularity stakes this season, the one that instantly catches my eye is red and pink. There’s something about these girly hues when worn together which raise them above the kitsch and segue them nicely into ‘now’. According to the good old colour theorists, pairing two colours which are neighbours on the colour wheel results in a pleasing clash – as well as red & pink, think yellow & orange, blue & green or fuchsia & scarlet.
This season I think my fascination with getting bolder on the colour front started back here when I was road testing new spring stripes but has since mushroomed into a slight obsession with me veering towards anything in these feminine hues whether I need them in my closet or not. Take this fabulous Baum und Pferdgarten knit from Quattro Rish in Reigate as the perfect example. There I was minding my own business heading to meet a friend for lunch, when bam, out of nowhere this gorgeous knit winked at me from the window and quite simply lured me into the store. I was totally helpless to resist, and this was even before a glass of fizz had passed my lips #truestory!

Driven on by this purchase I snooped around a bunch of online stores and found some other remarkably satisfying red and pink colour combos which would work really well for the season ahead. The trick to wearing bold colours is to start bravely. Top to toe in one colour is always a winning (and pretty slimming) look, but this season mix it up with a little tonal vibe – look for different shades of the same colour and pile them all on together, then practice your colour pairing by clashing your accessories. Also, scope out the cooler end of the colour spectrum and look to blue-based reds and pinks for a fresh take on the look.
If the thought of too much colour sets you off into a cold sweat then opt for dipping your toe in the water by trying a few accessories and pairing with neutrals. There are shoes and bags out there which have hopped on this trend so even the faintest hearts amongst us can have a bash.
