I’m a sucker for a white dress, particularly this time of year as the weather warms up and I ditch my usual uniform of jeans and an oversized knit and segue through to summer. There’s something about a white dress which, (although not hugely practical if you are still in small kids mode), screams day-dress-event-ready, and this season thanks to an abundance of shirt dresses and broderie gorgeousness it’s easy to snap one up for your busy season ahead. So, what with my slight obsession and all, I thought I’d bring you a quick post on a white summer dress edit, so you too can take a peek at this perennial summer winner.

I bought this little Me + Em cutie a few seasons ago, which I came across in their Elizabeth Street store. (If you haven’t checked out our Elizabeth Street shopping guide with Donna Ida yet – click here for a peek). So back to the annual struggle for the perfect LWD (little white dress). Before I found this dress, any item I’d picked up had either been too see-through and more beach appropro, or way too formal and not something you could fling on and head to any number of day to evening occasions, but this little sweetie I think nails precisely the right mood depending on how you style it. Last year I wore it to Wimbledon and a bunch of end of term school events, so my cost-per-wear on it is rapidly coming down – thus pleasing him indoors and his fiscal prudence policy!

It has just enough swish to have you feeling a little bit Audrey Hepburn and is weighty enough not to give you that ‘can-you-see-my-knickers’ thing which I get hypersensitive to when trying to acquire the right thing. I’ve paired it here with these gorgeous J.Crew satin heels and my fave Nannacay summer basket.

For me, the ideal white summer dress has got to have a robust enough fabric to make you feel like you can wear it without a slip underneath, as well as a touch of an on-trend vibe. A cute belt to nip in the waist of a shirt dress doesn’t go amiss either. In terms of what to look for in the on-trend department this season, as always a crisp cotton poplin or cotton voile works a treat in a shirt dress, a shift or a prairie dress. But hot on its heels this summer check out the new swathe of delicious broderie offerings which seem to be flooding the high street stores right now along with eyelet detailing. I’m also quite partial to anything lace, chiffon, silk or satin – all of which are totally summer ready and can be dressed up for an evening with heels and a cute clutch or dressed down with sneakers and a denim jacket for your everyday outfit. Also, square necks are having a bit of a moment, so if you spot one with that neckline, you are on to an on-trend double whammy.
