Tropical prints … what to wear this weekend

Tropical prints … less is more.

Yes, I did hear that there’s a frost on the way tonight, but I also heard that by Bank Holiday Monday temperatures are going to be far closer to the seasonal average… and it’s May people! My spring wardrobe has been busting to get out of the closet for the past few weeks, so I’m jumping on any notion that the weather might be warming up and throwing on my tropical prints this weekend.

Tropical prints are the bigger and bolder nephew of the floral print, and by rights like to appear in all sorts of brights. You won’t have any problem recognizing them when you walk into a store, as they will have you reaching for your sunnies with a reflex action.

I’m a big fan of shorts each summer, so attempting tropical prints in this small way seems to be the way to go. I’ve become quite enamoured with sunset hues of late, so these J.Crew tropical print jacquard shorts whispered to me from afar. But bearing in mind we aren’t quite talking beach weather, you can start your assault on the shorts-wearing season by incorporating the magic of layering to your look.

Tropical prints … how to wear it.

Tropical prints like to be noticed. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re on the diminutive side like me, then you need to consider the size of your prints. Yes, you can still do bright and bold, but keep your printed garment on the small side. If you are lucky enough to be blessed by amazonian genes however, then step right on up there and start perusing the tropical print jumpsuits and maxi dresses which are heading our way for summer.

I’ve paired these cute J.Crew shorts with neutral layers like this Karen Millen leather jacket and Theory sweater to keep the impact of the print under control. I love the look of brogues with shorts and spotted these sweet Acne Studio lace ups online.

Working the colour thing brightens up the day for me, so a pop of pink with this Cambridge Satchel mini bag, McQ by Alexander McQueen bracelet and snuggly DVF scarf tick the fluro box for me.

If the idea of sporting shorts has you cowering in the corner, quiver not, as this season bermuda shorts with their longer more flattering cut are set to be coming to our knobbly-knee rescue.
