Vintage car racing at Brands Hatch

Vintage car racing… classic British summer fun.

Just before we jetted off on our family vacay, we were lucky enough to be invited to a vintage car racing day at Brands Hatch, with some buddies who do that kind of daredevil stuff for fun on their days off. I’ve never been to any motor racing event, so when we got the call to head to the pits at Brands Hatch, with the chance to mingle with all those testosterone enhanced macho machines, the obvious answer was yes please!

vinage car racingAlthough my knowledge of vintage car racing is limited (i.e. I wouldn’t know a touring car from a formula Ford), I resolved to do my best to catalogue the day. Having said that, I might be just a girl and all that, but I’m assuming one needs one’s steering wheel attached to one’s car in order to have a sporting chance at competing in this game…?

It was a scorching hot day in early July, but luckily our hosts are dab hands at entertaining on the go, especially since they own what seems to be the Rolls Royce of RV/horsey transport jalopies, complete with traveling fizz glasses… which had to be road tested obvi!

Katy’s wheels are from Oakley Horseboxes.

Awesome stacking picnic container from John Lewis, and some of my summer day out must-haves; Clarins suncream & Marks & Spencer yummy strawberry platter.

Whilst our intrepid host got the car ready, and the kids (younger) sped around on electric scooters, or (older) sat around helping us drink the fizz and generally looking ‘pleur’, I took the opportunity to ogle at some of the other competitors cars.

Mark wears bizarre fire suit thingy, which am not sure will catch on even if we are in the midst of a jumpsuit/onesie style epidemic… but obviously very handy for health & safety issues in a fire… Mark’s is Sabelt racewear from Racewear.co.uk

It’s really easy to get trailer envy in the pits appaz… there’s always some joker who has a bigger ride or more motors…

A bit more time spent hanging out in the pits…

Then it was time for our hero/host to get properly suited up in his snazzy fireproof long johns… complete with dodgy girly looking shoes…

Shoes Sparco race boots.

The race was pretty scary stuff. After a collision at the start, when two cars spun off the track, our host came in a respectable 11th out of a pack of 30.

As our man of the hour returned safely back to the pits, the car was neatly put away and we celebrated the end of a fab day at Brands Hatch with a celebratory cupcake or two… Marks & Spencer natch!
