Wednesday’s Wish List: Old Style Sandals

For my wish list this week I’ve been tracking down old style sandals. Remember those ones your mum used to put you in at the first sign of summer for ‘Sunday Best’? Depending on wich decade you were born in, they ranged from the closed toe Mary Jane, to the Jesus creeper to the brogue tipped t-bar. They were always nasty stiff leather in a dull colour, with a strap that was way too fiddly to do up in a hurry when your mother was bustling you out of the door to visit your aged aunt/church/temple.

Things have changed a bit since then, and this season, the tables have turned on that woeful little sandal. There’s a hoard of soft supple leather pairs to choose from in all manner of colours and finishes, at price points that won’t make your mother do that thing where she still rolls her eyes to the sky when she spots you in a new pair of shoes.

When figuring out which style to choose, think closed toe if you’re off out on your bike with your chums and Timmy the dog for a picnic ‘Famous Five’ stylie. If you’ve just heard the ice cream van and it’s a matter of throwing something on while you dash out for a 99 with a flake on top, then any of the above work.

If all this talk of yesteryear has you hankering for some vintage duds, take a look here at my post on the current 50’s floral trend. Or for real vintage inspiration have a snoop at the lovely Fleur McGerr’s totally vintage site here.
