Statement shirts to love.

Statement shirts we are loving for spring.

If you haven’t nabbed one of this season’s new statement shirts in time for Spring… or Swinter as we still seem to be in, then now’s your chance to snap one up this Bank Holiday Monday. I’ve always been quite partial to a shirt, but more recently have been working the chunky knit as my go-to everyday uniform. As soon as the weather warms up, you can bet I’ll be shedding the woolly pullies for one of these gorgeous new season statement shirts which are set to hit the scene in a big way this summer.

This one is by new label Palmer Harding, Central Saint Martins alum Levi Palmer and Matthew Harding, who got together in 2012 to create shirts with innovative tailoring and dramatic silhouettes. And what do you know… the rest of the fash pack seem to have caught up with them too, as this season there are tons of these gorgeous shirt styles around for us to nab.

I’ve paired my deconstructed shirt with classic J.Brand Selena jeans, a Manu Atelier cross-body bag (similar pastel colour here) and these fab Tabitha Simmons heels – her ‘this season’ version of those are here. The thing I like about this brand and particularly these shirts is that they are nicely oversized but can also double up in some cases as a beach cover-up – especially the striped and poplin ones which will be perfect with denim cut-offs and a beach basket.

So what does it take for a regular shirt to make the grade in the ‘statement shirts’ league? You need to look for something a little different from the norm. Think billowing sleeves, tie details, ruching, eye-catching prints or bold stripes and anything asymmetric works a treat too. Look for pieces that go the extra mile, and you will be on the right track. Pair your statement piece with something simple and neutral and pared-back accessories so that your garment of choice is left to do all the talking.

Statement shirts… where to shop.

You can snap up your own statement shirts from high street to high end. Here are some of my faves out there right now.

With thanks to Jane Looker for the fab photos.
